The ask
Business cards that work both ways
The client wanted digital business cards for around 200 of its leadership team. The idea is simple: each person carries a physical card printed with a QR code, and a scan opens their personal profile page. From there the new contact can save their details straight to their phone or Outlook, and just as importantly, share their own details back.
Ownership
Built once, owned outright
Off-the-shelf products already do this (to a degree), but the leading option worked out at roughly £18,000 a year for this many users, a per-person subscription that never ends. A bespoke build running on infrastructure the client already had delivers the same features for a one-off build cost and minimal upkeep.
Control
Locked down where it matters
Profiles can only be created for corporate email addresses, and there is no public sign-up. Staff complete their own profiles but cannot touch the layout or branding; the design is fixed at platform level so every card looks consistent. Team leaders manage their own people through a tiered admin system, so nobody needs a developer to add a new starter.
Delivery
Phased around the business
Staff data moves to a new directory platform at the client’s own pace, so profiles launch via a simple spreadsheet upload now, with a direct integration scoped and agreed for when that system is ready. The cards, the portal and the physical print run were all managed as one project.
The outcome
Owned, not rented.
